Just got back from hearing Jim Sanborn talk about 'Kryptos' at the Hirschhorn. Some interesting thoughts:
  • "What is a mysterious sculpture with out mystery?" Art's integrity lies in its ability to retain mystery. When "kryptos' is solved, will it lose it's integrity? Will it die?
  • Mistakes were built into the code to hinder hackers.
  • Pulped CIA documents have associative value as an art material.
  • Sanborn likes typography. Herman Zapf, a houseguest of his parents, hand-designed a custom typeface for them.
  • Sanborn is interested works that require collaboration between multiple cultures to solve/appreciate.
